Post War Walther Ppk Serial Numbers

I have a friend who wants to know if his PPK is pre- or post-war. The serieal # is 793XXX, with no import marks. It has a crown over N proof, but no Nazi proof marks. As far as I can tell from my reference books, it's likely post-war, but the Blue Book does say that pre-war PPK's have a crown over N proof. Still, that's an awfully high serial #. Any info is appreciated.

The reference I have for the Walther PP & PPK models, 'Know your Walther PP & PPK pistols' by E.J.

Hoffschmidt, has the following information in it. On page 77, it shows a picture of what some call the second model of the PPK. It has the the 'Crown N' proofmark and carries Ser.

The book also states that the 'Crown N' proofmark is a pre-war proofmark used before April 1, 1940, when the proofmarks for PP & PPK models was changed to the 'Eagle N' proofmark. With this information, it seems that your friend has a pre-war version. Hope this helps. Serial numbering started from 750 000 and both PP annd PPK were mixed in that time.

After (about) million they started separate numbering including letter 'P' (PP-model) or 'K' (PPK) in the end of number. 'Crown N' was in use to 1940s BUT 'Eagle N' proofmark was in use for army guns from 1938. Easiest way to check pre or post war model is that from 1929 to 1945 Walthers were made in Zella-Mehlis and after war those were assembled (!) in Ulm Germany. Those markinsg are on slide.
